Cassie Robinson

I am Jackie Johnson and I was created on January 31, 1919. I was the first African-American to play in baseball's significant leagues in the modern era. I broke the baseball color line if the Brooklyn Dodgers started me personally at first basic on Apr 15, 1947. The Brooklyn Dodgers were the 1st league group to play a black man since the 1880's. The Dodgers ended ethnic segregation that had relegated black players to the Marrano leagues for six decades. My own character and unquestionable expertise challenged the regular basis of segregation and contributed significantly to the Civil Rights Movement.

Additionally to my cultural impact, I had an excellent baseball job. Over the 10 seasons, I actually played in six Universe Series and contributed to the Dodgers' 1955 World Championship. I was as well selected to six successive All-Star Video games, from 1949-1954. I earned the nationwide league most beneficial player honor in 1949- the 1st black person so privileged. I was inducted in the Football hall of fame in 1962. In 1977, the MLB " universally” retired my standard number, 42, across most league teams. I was the first pro athlete in different sport to be so honored. On 04 15, 2005, Major League Baseball provides adopted a brand new annual traditions, " Cassie Robinson Day” on which every player in each team would wear #42.

I was sometimes known for my own pursuits beyond the baseball gemstone. I was the first black television expert in MLB, and the initial black vice-president of an American corporation. Inside the 1960's I helped create the Freedom Countrywide Bank which is an African-American-owned financial institution located in Harlem, New York. In reputation of my own achievements off and on the field, I was after awarded the Presidential Honor of Liberty and the Congressional Gold Medal. My breaking of the hockey color range and my personal professional accomplishment symbolized the bigger changes and demonstrated that the fight for equal rights was more than merely a political matter.
